It's All Because of Peacocks

It's 3:30 am, I should be asleep. I'm tired, I worked all day and I'm still working. I'm blaming it on the peacocks. Yes, you heard me correct (or is it correctly? I'm honestly too tired to go to webster.com and find out). It's all the fault of the peacocks.
It all started innocently enough. "Let's start an ecard site" he said. Who is he? He is an online friend who out of the blue one day said "Let's start an ecard site". I laughed. I mean, neither of us knew a thing about ecards other than they are fun to send now and then. We both dabbled a bit in Paint Shop Pro but, really, did that qualify us as being owners of an ecard site?
Yet as days went by his enthusiasm was contagious and before I knew it, it sounded like a good idea, and so it began that for the next year I made ecards and more ecards. I haphazardly (wrong spelling?) learned Flash5 and animation, and looking back now I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Some of the ecards I came up with prove that point, yet there are others to this day I am quite proud of. Ok, now the ecards were made, how do we get them to be available to a site visitor? Again, we had no idea where to look or who to ask, but we figured it out. And I began to realize something I never understood before in my life. You see, I had been a stay at home mom, a high school graduate with no college education, and this was a very new venture for me. I was starting to realize that dreams are possible! If you want it bad enough, and you run into obstacles, like ...having no idea how to get these cards from my computer to on a site where a customer could send them...you do one of two things. You either quit, or you figure it out. That was one of the biggest lessons in life I ever learned. Well, not quite as simple as that perhaps, but yes, the message to me, the learning experience was, that you can do anything if you just keep plugging away at it. I spent about ten hours one time trying to figure out how a "library" works in a Poser4 program. I asked a zillion goofy questions on a Poser forum and finally, finally after ten hours someone gave me the answer I needed. You ask questions, you read, you google for answers, you spend time on forums bugging people smarter than yourself, you team up with people who have similar interests and similar work ethics and you push ahead until you get to that dream. Of you can quit of course.
But that brings me back to the fact that it is now a quarter to four in the morning, and I'm still working! I am telling you, it's the fault of those blasted peacocks. Oh dont' get me wrong, I love peacocks, I have several really cool ones, not living breathing ones of course, but nevertheless peacocks. It all started out with wondering what to name this free ecard site we started. I'm not even sure who came up with the name. I think it wasn't me, and I think it was actually even based on a joke, but hey, peacocks are cool, peacocks are pretty, beautiful even, and our ecards were going to be G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S! And so, Peacock Cards it was, and still is. Might not be the best name, relevant even to designing and selling T-shirts, but I do think it's memorable.
Check out my Peacock Cards Store if you have a chance. Peacock Cards is a proud member of Union Eight! Maybe one day I'll even have peacock designs in my galleries! Until then, here's a couple designs I did a while back, drawn with my mouse.

Just A Thinkin!

The other day I was thinking about Union Eight and was pondering the question of what people might believe Union Eight to be. So just out of curiosity (and because I was trying to put off my routines chores), I decided to look up the word Union ... just to see what it produced.

This is what my exploration produced:

Union – The act of uniting or the state of being united. Yep, I guess it applies to Union Eight as we are united in some ways and some activities.

Union – The state of matrimony; marriage. Lordy no, that tain't us folks! Most of us are already hitched up with someone and not interested in becoming polygamists. Too much laundry and dirty dishes involved for me to even think about it.

Union - A labor union that admits all workers in a given industry irrespective of their craft. Nah, that tain't us either! Even though most of us labor night and day, we don't admit all workers in our industry into Union Eight ... and are not card carrying Union folks. With that said, there are times I do feel like striking!

Union - The act of pairing a male and female for reproductive purposes; "the casual couplings of adolescents"; "the mating of some species occurs only in the spring". Now that's just down-right tickles me innards! Somebody get me a bible because I swear that is not what Union Eight folks are up too. But it did clear one thing up for me. Do y'all get a bit friskier in the spring? Fess up!

Union - An association of individuals or groups for a common purpose. Yep, that pretty much describes us in my mind. Each of us have separate identities and contributions that we combine for a common purpose in Union Eight. Bingo, we nailed it!

Well folks, we've uncovered the true meaning of the word Union of our Union Eight group. Mystery solved ... just call me Shereluck Homes. Now, we could go and explore the word Eight, but my head hurts from thinkin' so much and I only learned to count to five anyway. Therefore, we'll let all of you figure out what the Eight means in Union Eight for yourselves.

Before you set off on your own thinkin' exploration, just take a gander at the great gear Union Eight offers!

One of Eight, Make that Union Eight!

Hello from Michigan!

Do you remember the show The Waltons? It was one of my favorite shows. I think anyone who has seen it a few times remembers, if nothing else, the way they would say goodnight to each other. One would start, and another would join in saying goodnight and adding a goodnight to another family member until everyone had said goodnight.
Union Eight has reminded me of that show a lot in the past weeks. Our group of eight spends so much time together online discussing things like new programs, design tips, meta files, color codes, promotional and marketing plans, and the like that they are the first people I talk to when I wake up and the last I say goodnight to. We have become friends, close friends. I think in part that is why what we offer is so unique. We work together for the benefit of the group, for the benefit of creating the best possible designs and the best variety of designs to the public, to the people just like us, people with kids and grandkids, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and pets. We are from all walks of life, all different areas of the country, have different job skills and people skills, and if you put them all together you get this amazing mish mash of talent, creativity, and sincere dedication in giving our very best.
Coming up with the name Union Eight wasn’t the easiest thing in the world. We threw a lot of names out there, some that I look back on now and think wow, thank goodness we didn’t use that! Of course, when the name “Union Eight” was first presented to the group by one member, I admit I wasn’t all that fond of the name. It reminded me of trains, and copper mining as it was big in my area of the country when I was growing up and “union” reminded me of copper miners and trains. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just …what does it have to do with T-shirts? But, everyone else liked it and so I was okay with it as I didn’t exactly oppose the idea of it either. Then someone mentioned Old Navy and how it really doesn’t have anything to do with the military and I thought “well, that is true!”. I didn’t love the name until I saw the amazing Union Eight logo that one of our members created. She did such a fabulous job with it! For me, that logo made it all come together! And together we are, eight of us, online friends, entrepreneurs, business women and men (man!) with a strong work ethic, a lot of creativity, and a need to design. Designs that appeal to you, to your mother, to your children. Designs that say what you feel, designs that make you laugh, make you think, celebrate something special happening in your life. Nothing you need, but everything you want. Union Eight.
